Explanation of the author's statement: Al-Bukhari said in his Sahih: Qatadah said: (Allah created these stars for three purposes: as adornment for the sky, and as projectiles against the devils.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Ibn Du'ama al-Sudusi, who is he?
The student: From the Tabi'un

The Shaykh : He is from the Tabi'un. Qatadah said: "Allah created these stars for three purposes". This lam is for indicating the cause, meaning to explain the reason and wisdom. For three, not for three? It is acceptable, but "three" is better, meaning for three rulings. That is why he mentioned the number in the masculine form.
The first is: adornment for the sky. Allah the Exalted said:
And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils
[Al-Mulk 67:5]
This is one aspect. How is it an adornment? When a person sees a clear sky on a night without a moon and without electricity like ours, he finds in these stars a beauty that only Allah knows. He finds a great beauty in the sky because of them. So it is a great adornment for the sky. It becomes like a forest decorated with various types of shining silver. This is a large, bright star leaning toward redness, this one leans toward blueness, this one is faint, this one is medium, this one trembles with a strong tremor, this one trembles with a light tremor, and this one is still. This is something observed. Yes, this is a great adornment for the sky. Yes, and if it were decreed for one of you to travel and be in an area with no lights and no moon on a moonless night, he would find this adornment. This is one aspect.
Now, do we say that the apparent meaning of the noble verse is that the stars are embedded in the sky, or do we say that this is not implied? We say that it is not implied, because Allah says:
And He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command
[An-Nahl 16:12]
And He said in another verse:
all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.
[Al-Anbya 21:33]
meaning they move, each in its orbit. Therefore, I witnessed with my own eyes that the moon eclipsed one of the stars. What does its eclipse mean? It covered it. I saw it, I think, two years ago in Ramadan, at the end of Ramadan. Yes, it was one of the many bright stars. It was near it at the end of the month, then by the permission of Allah, near the dawn, it covered it once and we did not see it. So, are they in orbits of varying heights and descents? It is not necessary that they be embedded in the sky. If someone asks: How does Allah say adornment
We have adorned the nearest heaven
[As-Saffat 37:6]
? We say that decorating a thing with another thing does not imply that it is attached to it. Have you seen a man who builds a palace and places large, beautiful electric chandeliers around it, which are around the palace and not on its walls? The one looking at the palace from afar sees these chandeliers as its adornment and that it has beautified itself with them, even if they are not embedded around it. I mentioned this, although it may be said that it is superfluous talk. I fear that one day it will be established among people that they have reached something of these stars, and then the person remains in confusion about how they reach them if they are embedded in the sky, while the sky is such that the noblest of the angels and the noblest of mankind, Muhammad and Jibril (peace and blessings be upon them), could not enter this sky except by permission. And Allah Mighty and Majestic says:
And We made the sky a protected ceiling
[Al-Anbya 21:32]
Therefore, the person should be prepared for those who come with such sciences to make Muslims doubt what is settled in their fitrah and minds, which their religion brought.
Second: as projectiles against the devils. The devils here are the devils of the jinn, not the devils of mankind. The devils of mankind do not reach them, but the devils of the jinn reach them, because the devils of the jinn are more capable than the devils of mankind. Allah the Exalted said about their work:
And [also] the devils [of jinn] - every builder and diver
[Sad 38:37]
For whom? For Sulayman
And others bound together in shackles.
[Sad 38:38]
and so on. And a jinni said to Sulayman:
I will bring it to you before you rise from your place
[An-Naml 27:39]
From where? From Saba to Sham before you rise from your place. And it is a great throne, the throne of the Queen of Saba. He brings it to him before he rises from his place. Yes. And what indicates this? Their strength, speed, and penetration. One of the professors here at our college told us about a group of Indonesians studying at the College of Da'wah. He said, in Indonesia, they use the jinn without associating partners with Allah or disobeying Allah in reaching the use of them. Some of them even opened a workshop where only the jinn work. Yes. We said, how is this? He said, yes, he brings the materials and talks to them: "Make this, make that," and they start making it, and he did not see them.

The questioner : Are they believers or disbelievers?

The Shaykh : No, they are believers. And he says they are believers and they remember Allah. It is not possible to ask them for anything that angers Allah, ever.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : We do not know about them again. The important thing is that in any case, I said that the one who said they are few among the students from Indonesia among us said so. And he says they are trustworthy. And he was reciting words of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah on this topic. I think we referred to it before. Yes, he mentioned it in the Fatwas and in the Prophethoods regarding the help of mankind by the jinn. So these devils have a great penetrating power. Allah the Exalted said about them:
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing
[Al-Jinn 72:9]
Their places are in the sky
but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
[Al-Jinn 72:9]
.

The questioner : Now, O Shaykh, the one who said, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns."

The Shaykh : How?

The questioner : The one who said, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns," is he from the jinn?

The Shaykh : Yes. Before you rise from your place. The second one, no, they say he was a righteous man and he knew, as they mentioned, the Greatest Name of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), by which if He is called, He answers. So he called Allah by His Greatest Name to bring it to him, and the angels carried it. And the angels are stronger than the jinn, without doubt, and faster in penetration. They ascend to where Allah the Exalted wills in all the heavens. Yes.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : By Allah, we do not know again, but it appears, and Allah knows best, that they fly with it?

The questioner : They fly with it.

The Shaykh : Yes, because if he walked with it on the ground, it would crush the people and...
The student: No, not...

The Shaykh : No, no, truly, he carries this very thing, flies, and distributes it. So this jinni will carry the throne and bring it immediately before you rise from your place... Yes, yes, Glory to Allah the Great.
Now, He made them projectiles against the devils, He pelted them with them, meaning He threw them at them. And pelting is throwing. Yes.
