When is it said: “O Allah, help me to remember You, give thanks to You, and worship You in the best manner”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: After the taslim of the obligatory prayer, the person next to me objected to me when he heard me making the supplication:
O Allah, help me in remembering You, in giving You thanks, and worshipping You well.اللهم أعني على ذكرك وشكرك وحسن عبادتك
Sunan Abi Dawud 1522Sahih (Al-Albani)
He told me that this supplication is to be made before the taslim, not after it. What is the correct ruling in this matter?

A: It is better to make this supplication and similar ones before the taslim; because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught the Companions the tashahhud, he said:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him.ثم ليتخير من المسألة ما شاء
Sahih Muslim 402b
. In another wording:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him most and recite it.ثم ليتخير من الدعاء أعجبه إليه فيدعو به
Bulugh al-Maram 2:203
.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him):
Do not fail to say after every prayer: O Allah, help me to remember You, give thanks to You, and worship You in the best mannerلا تدع أن تقول دبر كل صلاة اللهم أعني على ذكرك وشكرك وحسن عبادتك
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2:423
. And the back of a thing is its end, just as the back of an animal is its end. And what follows the prayer after the taslim is included in this, for it is called the back, as established in the two Sahihs from al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him)He said:
The Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say at the end of every prayer, "There is no god but Allah alone with no partner. His is the Kingdom and His is the praise and He has power over everything. O Allah, none can withhold what You give nor can anyone give what You withhold. Nor will the wealth of someone with wealth help him against Youكان النبي ﷺ يقول في دبر كل صلاة: لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير، اللهم لا مانع لما أعطيت ولا معطي لما منعت ولا ينفع ذا الجد منك الجد
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 460
.
It is known that this dhikr is said after the taslim, and this is explicitly stated in some narrations of the hadith of al-Mughirah and others. This indicates that there is no harm in making supplication after the taslim and after the dhikr, in what is between the servant and his Lord, acting in accordance with all the evidence. And success is from Allah.
