The Imam Reciting Verses of the Attributes
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on reciting the verses of the attributes?
A: I am not aware of any transmitted report on this matter; because what was transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not, to our knowledge, distinguish between the verses of the attributes and others. It may be that weeping and humility occur at them, for the verses of the attributes are undoubtedly among those that have an effect and call forth weeping; because one remembers the greatness of Allah and His immense favor, and so he weeps. For example, His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):[Al-A'raf 7:54] the verse [Al-A'raf: 54]. When one reflects upon it, it necessitates for him weeping and humility out of fear of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He).
And so it is with similar verses: such as His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):[Al-Hashr 59:22] He is Allah, there is no deity except Him, the King, the Pure, the Peace, the Trustworthy, the Protector, the Mighty, the Compeller, the Sublime. Glory to Allah from what they associate with Him [Al-Hashr: 22-23] to the end of the surah. All these verses are among those that cause weeping; because of the remembrance of the greatness of Allah, the perfection of His favor and His attributes toward His servants, and the perfection of the meanings of these attributes, so it affects him in a way that causes weeping.
Therefore, reflecting upon the verses containing the names of Allah and His attributes is very important, just as reflecting upon the verses containing mention of Paradise and the Fire, and mention of mercy and punishment.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when a verse of glorification passed him, he would glorify Allah in the night prayer. When a verse of warning passed him, he would seek refuge. When verses of promise passed him, he would make supplication. Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this from him (peace and blessings be upon him).
This is from his action (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Sunnah: supplication at verses of hope, seeking refuge at verses of fear, and glorification at verses of the names of Allah and His attributes.

And so it is with similar verses: such as His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ Therefore, reflecting upon the verses containing the names of Allah and His attributes is very important, just as reflecting upon the verses containing mention of Paradise and the Fire, and mention of mercy and punishment.
