The Ruling on Kissing and Embracing the One Being Consoled

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We observe that during times of condolence, most people, when they wish to offer their condolences, kiss the one being consoled or embrace him. Some people reject this and say that offering condolences is only a handshake. What is your opinion on this, Your Eminence?

A: The best practice in offering condolences and when meeting is the handshake, unless the one offering condolences or the one being met has just returned from a journey, in which case it is prescribed to embrace along with the handshake. This is based on the statement of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) :
The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when they met, would shake hands, and when they returned from a journey, they would embrace.كان أصحاب النبي ﷺ إذا تلاقوا تصافحوا وإذا قدموا من سفر تعانقوا
And success is from Allah.
