The Ruling on Making Du'a for the Deceased After Burial

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The questioner, Brother A. A. A. from Ta'if, says in his question: I see some people standing at the grave after the burial of the deceased and making du'a for him. Is this permissible? Is there a prescribed du'a that is said after the burial is completed? Is it collective, such that one person makes du'a and the others say "Ameen" to his du'a? Or does each person make du'a individually? Please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you with good.

A: The established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates the permissibility of making du'a for the deceased after burial. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand over the grave when he finished burying the deceased and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask Allah for steadfastness for him, for he is now being questionedاستغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا الله له التثبيت فإنه الآن يسأل
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 14:120
There is no harm in one person making du'a and the listeners saying "Ameen," or in each person making du'a for the deceased individually. And success is from Allah.
