The Ruling on Zakah on Vehicles Prepared for Transport

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is there zakah on commercial vehicles that travel and bring in grains and other goods? And likewise for camels of a similar nature?

Answer:
There is no zakah on vehicles or camels prepared for transporting grains, luggage, and other items from one country to another, because they are not prepared for sale, but rather for transport and use. However, if the vehicles are prepared for sale, and likewise other items such as camels, donkeys, mules, and other animals that are permissible to sell, if they are prepared for sale, then zakah becomes obligatory on them; because they thereby become trade goods, and zakah becomes obligatory on them. This is based on what Abu Dawud and others narrated from Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
used to command us to pay Zakah from (the goods) we had prepared for saleيأمرنا أن نخرج الصدقة من الذي نعده للبيع
Bulugh al-Maram 4:25
. The majority of scholars have adopted this view, and Imam Abu Bakr ibn al-Mundhir (may Allah have mercy on him) reported the consensus of the scholars on this matter. May Allah grant us assistance.
