The obligatory zakah due on the owner of a printing press

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The owner of a printing press asked about its zakah. Some said that zakah is due on what the press produces, while others said that zakah is due on the press’s equipment and machinery, as well as its production. What is the correct position in this matter?

Answer:
Zakah is only obligatory on the people of printing presses, factories, and the like with respect to items prepared for sale. As for items prepared for use, there is no zakah on them. Likewise, there is no zakah on cars, furniture, and utensils prepared for use. This is based on what Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated in his Sunan with a good chain from Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to give charity from what we prepare for saleأمرنا رسول الله ﷺ أن نخرج الصدقة مما نعده للبيع
.
As for money in the form of gold, silver, and paper currency, zakah is obligatory on all of it, even if it is prepared for spending, provided it reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed over it. And success is from Allah.
