Question: His Eminence Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him)
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
I am a state delegate sent to America, and it happened that we fasted the month of Ramadan this year, 1415 AH, by shortening the month of Sha'ban to "29" days without verifying the crescent moon; because the sky was covered with clouds, and we did not fast except based on what some of the Islamic centers here informed us of and we followed. The argument is that the Saudi state fasted by shortening the month, i.e., Sha'ban, while most Islamic centers fasted by completing the month, i.e., Sha'ban, according to the calendar they had. So which of us is correct? And what must the one who erred among us do?
Answer: And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings:
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The answer is: Whoever fasted with the fasting of Saudi Arabia has hit the mark; because the sighting of the crescent moon was established by the legal evidence on the evening of Monday, the night of Tuesday. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 1970 It was narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih. And there are many hadiths in this meaning; and whoever did not fast except on Wednesday, he must make up the day, which is Tuesday according to the time of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
