How to Pay Zakah from Salaries
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am an employee who receives a good salary, praise be to Allah, but I do not know how to pay its zakah. Should I pay it every month, or should I set a specific lunar year (hawl) for everything in my possession that I have obtained through my job or otherwise? And if the amount is spent and I obtain a new amount that reaches the nisab, do I start calculating the hawl from the date of the first amount that was spent, or from the date of obtaining the new amount?
A: Whenever you obtain an amount, the hawl begins from the new amount. And whenever money comes to you, make a plan to keep track of it by writing it down. So, when the hawl completes for this new money, pay its zakah. Thus, what came in Muharram, you pay its zakah in Muharram; what came to you in Safar, you pay its zakah in Safar; and what came to you in Rabi' al-Akhir, you pay its zakah in Rabi' al-Akhir, and so on.
But if you bring forward the later one with the earlier one, and you pay the zakah of the later one along with the earlier one, you are to be commended, and there is no harm in that. Even if you have salaries for the months of Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' al-Akhir, and so on, with each month written down for you, and then you pay the zakah of these months along with Muharram, bringing it forward with Muharram, there is no harm on you. You pay the zakah of all of them after the completion of the hawl for the first one, and there is no harm on you in that. In fact, that is better.
But it is obligatory for you to pay every zakah at its proper time. Whenever the hawl completes for the money, you pay the obligatory amount according to what you have written down and the time you have recorded. And if you bring forward some of that along with the zakah of what came before it, there is no harm on you, as mentioned above.
