Fatwa No. ( 18316 )
Q: I inform Your Eminence that I inherited from my father a sum of sixty thousand riyals fifteen years ago. The amount remained with me in cash, and I did not dispose of it until three years ago, when I paid out thirty thousand riyals. Thirty thousand riyals remain with me to this day. Since I have not paid the zakah on this amount from the date I received it until now, I hope Your Eminence will inform me of what is obligatory for me regarding the zakah on this money and the amount of it.
A : It is obligatory for a Muslim to pay the zakah on his wealth immediately once a lunar year has passed over it. If he delays paying it without a valid legal excuse, he has committed a sin, and it becomes obligatory for him to pay it all immediately, even if it has been for several years. Therefore, you must pay the zakah on the aforementioned amount for all the past years immediately, starting from the completion of the first lunar year from the date you received it. You must also repent to Allah the Exalted for delaying the zakah. As for the thirty thousand you paid out three years ago, its zakah is no longer due from you after you paid it, but you are responsible for its zakah for the time that has passed. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
