The Ruling on the Condition of a Child’s Intention

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is a child’s intention required?

Answer: If the child is under seven years old, he does not have an intention; rather, his guardian intends on his behalf. The guardian is the one who takes charge of the child’s Hajj, whether he is the father, the mother, or someone else. This is based on the authentic hadith in which a woman brought a child to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said, “O Messenger of Allah, does this child have a Hajj?” He said:
Yes, and you have a rewardنعم ولك أجر
. And it was narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
We recited Talbiyah on behalf of the children and stoned the Pillars on their behalf.لبينا عن الصبيان ورمينا عنهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3038Da’if (Darussalam)
.
As for when the child has reached seven years of age or more, his guardian teaches him the intention and other matters.
