The Shaykh : Regarding the exaggeration in loving them and praising them. Always, the middle path is the best of things. Countering an innovation with an innovation only increases the strength of the innovation; it increases the strength of the innovation because... they oppose them just as they opposed these people, and there remains with us in the religion how many innovations? Two innovations. But if we counter the innovation with a Sunnah, the innovation is erased and the Sunnah is established. Among the innovations that some people introduce is that in the days of Ashura, they introduce an innovation against the innovation of the Rafidah. The Rafidah in the days of Ashura, what do they do? They grieve, they wail, they lament, they strike their faces, and they beat their chests—I think their chests and their backs—until I heard that they bring chains, iron chains. May Allah be praised to You
Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds زين لهم سوء أعمالهم
[At-Tawbah 9:37]
They strike themselves with them, is that right?
The student: Knives.

The Shaykh : Knives as well? We ask Allah for safety. I mean, if they had been commanded to do this by Allah, they would not have done it, but Satan commands them and they do it. If they returned to themselves and thought about the matter, what benefit do al-Hasan and al-Husayn ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib get from this? What do they get? If the Messenger said:
The dead is punished in the grave because of wailing on it. إن الميت يعذب في قبره بما نيح عليه
Sahih Muslim 927b
. Would al-Husayn ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) be pleased that one who claims to be among his awliya (close friends of Allah)—that he is among his awliya—would be pleased that he do to himself like this, tormenting himself forever? If al-Husayn ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had known about these people, he would have denied them with a great denial, that they do such a thing. But this is from Satan, and this is their punishment in this world.
A group of others opposed them and said, "No, we display joy and happiness on the day of Ashura. We adorn the boys and children, we give them cookies, we give them what? Sweets, yes, and we give them coins, and we make it a day of joy and happiness." This is also a mistake, a mistake and an error, because they countered an innovation with an innovation. So what do we do? We do what we say: this matter that these Rafidah do in these days is a mistake and this is misguidance. If they had returned to their minds, let alone their faith, they would have known that this is one of the greatest mistakes. Who commands this? Does Allah command it in His Book, or His Messenger in his Sunnah, or his Caliphs in their caliphates, or al-Husayn ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) in what he was in? No, no one commands this. No sane person commands this. Rather, the sane person and the Shari'ah forbid all of that.
And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light. ومن لم يجعل الله له نورا فما له من نور
[An-Nur 24:40]
We ask Allah to illuminate our hearts with faith and knowledge.
