Ruling on Taking a Deposit

Question:
I sold my car to a certain person, and we agreed on its price. However, he gave me a sum of seven hundred riyals, on the condition that the car would remain with me until he paid the rest of the price. After about half a month, he came to me asking to cancel the sale and return the money he had paid me in advance to him. I refused to do so. Does he have the right to demand it? And what is required of me now?

Answer: If you respond to his request and return his money to him, that is better, and you will have a great reward with Allah; for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever accepts back what he sold to a Muslim, Allah will forgive his fault.من أقال مسلمًا بيعته أقال الله عثرته
Bulugh al-Maram 7:57
.
As for being bound by the contract, you are not obligated to uphold it if the sale has met its conditions that are considered valid in the Shari'ah. And success is from Allah.
