The Ruling on Dealing with Owners of Forbidden Wealth

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible for a person to deal with someone he knows has forbidden wealth? Or is it true that no bearer of a burden will bear another’s burden?

Answer: If he knows that his wealth is forbidden, he should not deal with him. But if it is mixed, he may deal with him; just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dealt with the Jews, whose wealth was mixed. They had riba (usury or interest) and they had invalid contracts, yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dealt with them; he bought from them and ate their food.
And Allah has permitted us their food, even though they have what they have, as the Exalted said:
For wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We made unlawful for them [certain] good foods which had been lawful to them, and for their averting from the way of Allah many [people],فَبِظُلْمٍ مِّنَ الَّذِينَ هَادُواْ حَرَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ طَيِّبَاتٍ أُحِلَّتْ لَهُمْ وَبِصَدِّهِمْ عَن سَبِيلِ اللّهِ كَثِيرًا ۝
[An-Nisa 4:160]
and their taking of riba (usury or interest) when they were forbidden from it, and their consuming the wealth of people wrongfully [al-Nisa: 160-161]. So they have permissible sales, and they have forbidden sales, and they have permissible earnings and forbidden earnings.
So if a person’s wealth is mixed, there is nothing wrong with dealing with him. But if you know that this wealth is forbidden, do not buy from him or sell to him in this forbidden wealth.
