Ruling on repaying a loan with an equivalent amount of a different currency

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible to borrow a sum of money in riyals and repay it with an equivalent amount in dollars?

Answer: If it is stipulated in the contract, this is not permissible. This is a sale, and a sale of cash for cash with a delay is not permissible. However, if he lent him Saudi riyals, or Egyptian pounds, or British pounds, and then at the time of repayment he gave him dollars, with a delay between the two transactions, hand to hand, there is no harm. This is like what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reported; when some people complained to him, it was said: "They sell dinars and take dirhams, and they sell dirhams and take dinars." He said:
There is nothing wrong with it if you take the price on that day, still unfinished business between you bothلا بأس أن تأخذوها بسعر يومها، ما لم تفترقا وبينكما شيء
Sunan an-Nasa'i 4589Hasan (Darussalam)
. So if a person borrows, for example, one thousand riyals as a loan, and then at the time of repayment the two parties agree that he will give him dollars for the one thousand riyals, or Kuwaiti dinars, or Jordanian dinars, or British pounds, or something similar, there is no harm if they agree on it and exchange them immediately, hand to hand.
