The Ruling on Borrowing from Money Deposited with a Person

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: The people of good trusted me; they made me the trustee of a donation fund for building a secondary school, and during the construction, I needed the aforementioned amount to build a house for myself, so I took it.
Before the end of the school building project, I submitted the amount I had to the committee for the school, and I said: "This money is from a generous lady who does not like her name to be mentioned," but the truth is that the amount is what is in my liability, but I was ashamed to reveal the truth. So, is there a sin on me for taking the amount, knowing that I repaid it? And what is the way to repentance? Please inform us, may Allah have mercy on you.

Answer: It is not permissible for one who is entrusted with any money for any project to dispose of it for himself; rather, he must preserve and protect it until it is spent in its proper place.
And you must repent to Allah for what you did, and for the lie you committed due to your betrayal of the trust, and whoever repents with sincere repentance, Allah turns to him in mercy; for Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance.يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَّصُوحًا
[Al-Tahrim: 8], and He said (peace and blessings be upon him) :
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
[Al-Nur: 31].
And sincere repentance: is that which includes regret for the sins that have passed, and abandoning them; out of fear of Allah the Exalted and magnification of Him, and the sincere resolve not to return to them, along with returning the injustices, if the repentant person has injustices against people in blood, money, or honor, or if he has considered them permissible.
And whoever has wronged people through backbiting, and fears that if he informs them, something greater than the harm will occur? He does not inform them, but prays for them, seeks forgiveness for them, and displays what he knows of their good qualities in the places where he backbit them, in contrast to his ill-treatment of them through backbiting.
