The Ruling on Meat of Unknown Origin in the Lands of the Disbelievers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Frozen and refrigerated meat is sold here in America, and we do not know who slaughtered it or how it was slaughtered. So, may we eat from it?

Answer: If the region where the aforementioned meat is located contains only the People of the Book, namely the Jews and the Christians, then their slaughtered meat is lawful, even if you do not know how they slaughtered it; because the original ruling is that their slaughtered meat is lawful; due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for themالْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ وَطَعَامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَابَ حِلٌّ لَّكُمْ وَطَعَامُكُمْ حِلُّ لَّهُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:5]
the verse [al-Ma'idah: 5].
However, if there are disbelievers other than them in the region, do not eat it; because of the mixing of the lawful with the forbidden. Likewise, if you know that those who sell this meat slaughter it in a manner other than the Shari'ah method; such as strangling or stunning, do not eat it—whether the slaughterer is a Muslim or a disbeliever—due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death]حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةُ وَالْدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَمَا أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ اللّهِ بِهِ وَالْمُنْخَنِقَةُ وَالْمَوْقُوذَةُ وَالْمُتَرَدِّيَةُ وَالنَّطِيحَةُ وَمَا أَكَلَ السَّبُعُ إِلاَّ مَا ذَكَّيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
the verse [al-Ma'idah: 3].
May Allah guide the Muslims to understanding in the religion, for He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
