Explanation of the author's statement: "… or intoxication or something similar …"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Now, the author says "or intoxication". Does one who loses his mind due to intoxication make up the prayer? Why? We say, yes, he must make it up if his intoxication was forbidden. There is no doubt about the obligation to make it up because it occurred by his own choice; that is one reason. And because he is not permitted to do so; that is the second reason. And because if we exempted him from making up the prayer, and he is one of those who drink intoxicants, the general rule is that those who drink intoxicants have weak faith. This man would then drink an intoxicant whenever he wanted to avoid praying, thereby committing two sins: drinking the intoxicant and leaving the prayer. Is that so, or not? Now, if you say, "Does not Allah say
O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تقربوا الصلاة وأنتم سكارى حتى تعلموا ما تقولون
[An-Nisa 4:43]
?" The answer is from two angles. The first angle is that this is a state of his choice. The second angle is that Allah says, "Do not approach them until you know what you are saying." This means that once you know what you are saying, then do it. Do it as a performance if it is within its time, or as a make-up if it is after the time. So, in reality, there is no evidence that it is exempted. For this reason, the four Imams agreed that one who loses his mind due to intoxication must make up the prayer. Now, if someone asks, "What do you say about a man who became intoxicated without knowing that what he drank was an intoxicant? Does he make it up or not?" Yes, he makes it up. It appears that he must make it up.

The questioner : He did not choose it.

The Shaykh : He did not choose it, but he is excused due to ignorance. He is excused due to ignorance, but yes, the sin is dropped. As for making up the prayer, it appears that it is obligatory for him, because this was also done by the choice of the actor who gave him the intoxicant. However, the sin is dropped from him because he did not know about it. As for saying that the make-up is dropped from him by analogy to the unconscious person, there is a problem with that, because the unconscious person is usually so by the action of Allah the Exalted, and no one has a choice in that matter. Yes, that is right.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : That unconsciousness …

The Shaykh : Pay attention.

The questioner : Pay attention, meaning …
