Continuation of the explanation of the author's statement: "… and following it is the time of 'Asr until the shadow of a thing becomes twice its length after the shadow at noon. And the time of necessity is until its setting…".

The Shaykh : The shadow of every thing is twice its length, and the evidence for this is the hadith of Jibril, the hadith of Jabir in the story of Jibril. However, the stronger opinion in this issue is the hadith of 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said
the time of the afternoon prayer (lasts) as long as the sun does not turn pale وقت العصر ما لم تصفر الشمس
Sahih Muslim 612b
until it turns yellow ما لم تصفر
meaning until it turns yellow. This is generally more than the shadow of a thing being twice its length. The excess is acceptable because the hadith is authentic, it is in Muslim, and it is from the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
Accordingly, the excess is acceptable, and it is possible to respond to the hadith of Jibril by saying that "the shadow of every thing is twice its length" refers to the beginning of the prayer, the beginning of the prayer. It is possible that if the prayer is performed and completed, the sun may have turned yellow, especially in the days of winter and the shortness of the 'Asr time.
In any case, whether this reconciliation is valid or not, taking the excess is necessary because it encompasses the lesser. Taking the excess is taking both the excess and the lesser, but taking the lesser negates the excess. Therefore, we say that the time of 'Asr is until the sun turns yellow.
Now, the evidence that the time of necessity is until its setting is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
he who finds one rak'ah of the afternoon prayer before sunset, he in fact finds the afternoon prayer. من أدرك ركعة من الصلاة من صلاة العصر قبل أن تغرب الشمس فقد أدرك العصر
Sahih Muslim 608a
This is an explicit text that the time extends until the setting.
Now, if someone asks, why did you not take this hadith? Because it is an excess over the hadith of 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr. Since we have adopted this principle that the excess is taken because it encompasses the lesser and not vice versa, why did we not take it? Because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) specified and said
as long as the sun does not turn pale ما لم تصفر الشمس
Sahih Muslim 612b
It is possible to reconcile the two hadiths by saying
as long as the sun does not turn pale ما لم تصفر الشمس
Sahih Muslim 612b
This is the time of choice, and until the setting is the time of necessity. What is meant by the time of necessity? For example, if a person is occupied with a necessary task, let us suppose he was injured and occupied with bandaging and dressing this wound, and he is able to pray, but there is hardship until before the setting. We say that if this man prays in this state before the setting, he has prayed in the time. Does he sin or not? He does not sin, because this is a time of necessity. If a person is compelled, there is no blame on him. Likewise, if he has guests whom he cannot leave out of fear of them, or fear. Yes, fear of them includes what I want to say. Guests who came as travelers, may have prayed 'Asr combined, and stayed with him, and he is unable to leave them out of fear of them, for example, because they are thieves. The point is, he is forced to be afflicted by them. He fears that if he leaves, they will take everything, or he fears them because they are great in themselves and he cannot go out while they are present. He also fears them because they have authority over him or something similar. Here we say that necessity permits him to delay until before the setting of the sun, but after the setting it is not permissible. As for the problem with the thieves, we say either he locks them in or he prays with them if possible. Yes, that is right.

The questioner : … they delayed the prayer so that the people would sleep … .

The Shaykh : This is a sound question.
