Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: We are at the last of the pillars of faith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained in his statement
To believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day and the divine decree, both good and bad
Musnad Ahmad 191Sahih (Darussalam)
We mentioned that belief in the divine decree must include belief in four levels: belief in the knowledge of Allah, belief in the writing of Allah, belief in the will of Allah, and belief in the creation of Allah.
And his statement (peace and blessings be upon him)
Its good and its evil.
Good is what a person benefits from and what suits him, such as beneficial knowledge, abundant and pure wealth, health, family, and children, and the like. Evil is the opposite of that, such as ignorance, poverty, illness, the loss of family and children, and the like. All of this is from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). All of this is from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), whether good or evil. Indeed, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) decrees good for a wisdom and decrees evil for a wisdom, as He said:
And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.
[Al-Anbya 21:35]
So when Allah knows that it is good and wise to decree evil, He decrees it because of the great benefits that result from it, as He said:
Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].
[Ar-Rum 30:41]

If someone asks how to reconcile the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
in the Divine Decree about good and evil
Sahih Muslim 8a
with his statement (peace and blessings be upon him)
And evil is not with You.
, in which he denied that evil is from Him, the answer is that we say: Pure evil never comes from the action of Allah. Pure evil, which contains no good, neither in the present nor in the future, cannot exist in the action of Allah. This is from one perspective, because even the evil that Allah decrees as evil must have a good outcome; it is evil for some people and good for others. Have you seen if Allah sent down heavy rain that flooded a person's crops, but it benefited the land and a nation benefited from it? It would be good for those who benefited from it and evil for those who were harmed by it. So it is good from one aspect and evil from another.
Second, even the evil that Allah decrees for a person is good in reality, because if he is patient and seeks reward from Allah, he will attain a reward many times greater than the evil he suffered. For this reason, it is mentioned regarding some of the worshippers that she was injured in her finger or hand, and it was wounded, but she was patient, thanked Allah for it, and said: "The sweetness of her reward made her forget the bitterness of her patience" Then we say that evil is not in the action of Allah itself, but in His created things. The created things are what contain good and evil, while the action itself is good. For this reason, Allah said:
(1) Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak (2) From the evil of that which He created قل أعوذ برب الفلق من شر ما خلق
[Al-Falaq 113:1-2]
meaning, from the evil of what Allah created. Evil only exists in the created things, not in the action itself. As for the action of Allah, it is good. This is indicated by the fact that if you had a sick person and it was said to you that his cure is to cauterize him with fire, and you cauterized him with fire, the fire is certainly painful, but your action is not evil; it is good for the patient because you are only waiting for a good outcome from this cauterization. Similarly, the action of Allah regarding disliked things and things that contain evil is good in relation to His action and creation, because much good results from them.
If someone asks how to reconcile this with His statement:
What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself
[An-Nisa 4:79]
, the answer is that we say:
What comes to you of good is from Allah
[An-Nisa 4:79]
meaning, from His grace, He is the One who bestowed it upon you, first and last.
but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself
[An-Nisa 4:79]
meaning, you are the cause of it; you are the cause, otherwise the One who decreed it is Allah, but you are the cause, as in His statement:
And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:30]
In summary, everything that happens is by the decree of Allah, whether it is good or evil. As for good, its matter is clear and its aspect is clear that it is from Allah. As for evil, we say that evil is not in the action of Allah, but in His created things. We also say that these created things that contain evil may be good from another aspect, either for the person afflicted by it himself or for others. For example, if rain falls and destroys a person's crops, but it benefits the nation, then it becomes evil for one person but much good for others. Or we can also say it is evil for you from one aspect and good for you from another aspect, because in this evil that befell you, there is much reward for you, and it may be a cause for your rectitude and your recognition of Allah's blessing upon you, so the outcome is good. And success is from Allah.
The student: May Allah reward you with good.
The reader: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted in the context of the narration of 'Umar: "He said: Then tell me about ihsan (excellence in worship). He said: That you worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then He sees you. He said: Then tell me about the Hour. He said: The one asked about it knows no more than the one asking. He said: Then tell me about its signs. He said: That a slave woman gives birth to her mistress, and that you see the barefoot, naked, and destitute shepherds competing in building tall structures. Then he left, and I remained for a while, then he said: O 'Umar, do you know who the questioner was? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: It was Jibril (Gabriel) who came to you to teach you your religion" Narrated by Muslim.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
