The Shaykh : In the context of the verses concerning enjoining good and forbidding evil, he (may Allah have mercy on him) cited this verse: [Al-Ma'idah 5:78] Cursing is expulsion and distance from the mercy of Allah, and may Allah protect us from that. One does not deserve it unless he commits a major sin from the major sins. The Children of Israel are the descendants of Ya'qub (Jacob), son of Ishaq (Isaac), son of Ibrahim (Abraham). "Israel" is a title for Ya'qub, son of Ishaq, son of Ibrahim. Ibrahim had two sons: Isma'il (Ishmael) and Ishaq. Isma'il is the elder son, and it is him whom Allah commanded to sacrifice. Allah commanded him to sacrifice him, and then Allah granted them both relief by lifting this command and abrogating it, and Allah the Mighty and Majestic ransomed him with a great sacrifice. As for Ishaq, he is the second son of Ibrahim, and he is from his wife. As for Isma'il, he is from his concubine Hajar (may Allah be pleased with her). So the Children of Israel are from the lineage of Ya'qub, son of Ishaq. Allah sent many messengers to them, and among them were those who transgressed, killing the prophets without right, and may Allah protect us from that. They also did not restrain themselves from the evil they committed; rather, some of them would see the evil and not forbid it. The story of the town by the sea is famous and well-known in the Noble Qur'an. They were a people of the Jews to whom Allah forbade hunting from the sea on the day of Sabbath. So on the day of Sabbath, the fish would come in swarms to the surface of the water due to their abundance, and on the day they did not observe the Sabbath, they would not come to them. So the time became long for them, and they said: "We must devise a trick to reach the hunting." What is this trick? They said: "We will place nets in the sea, and when the fish come on the day of Sabbath, the nets will catch them, and when it is Sunday, we will take them." So they did that. Among them were some who admonished and forbade this evil, some who were silent, and some who were the doers. So Allah the Mighty and Majestic punished them and said: [Al-Baqarah 2:65] So they became, and may Allah protect us from that, monkeys. The children of Adam turned into wretched, humiliated monkeys. The point of this is that among them were some who did not admonish and did not fulfill what Allah obligated upon them of forbidding evil, so they became among those who entered into this curse. For this reason, it was said on the tongue of Dawud (David) and 'Isa (Jesus), son of Maryam: [Al-Baqarah 2:61] Dawud is much later than Musa (Moses), and 'Isa, son of Maryam, is likewise. So these two prophets cursed those who do not restrain themselves from the evil they commit, and Allah related that from them, affirming it. So whoever does not restrain himself from evil becomes among the cursed, and may Allah protect us from that. And in this is evidence for the obligation of forbidding evil and that leaving it is a cause for cursing and expulsion from the mercy of Allah.
