The Ruling on Satiety and Quenching Thirst from Food and Drink

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Should a person sometimes eat until he is full and sometimes refrain from eating until full?

Answer:
It is better for him not to eat until completely full, but if he does eat until full, there is nothing wrong with it. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Hurayrah:
Drink.اشرب
, so he drank, then he said:
Drink.اشرب
, so he drank, then he said:
Drink.اشرب
, so he drank, then he said:
Drink.اشرب
. He said: By Him who sent you with the truth, I find no room for it. There is nothing wrong with eating until full, and there is nothing wrong with drinking until one’s thirst is quenched, but if he refrains from doing so at times, it is better, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink,بحسب ابن آدم لُقَيمات يُقِمْنَ صلبه، فإن كان لا محالةَ فثلثٌ لطعامه، وثلثُ لشرابه...
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2380Sahih (Darussalam)
, meaning: to strengthen oneself for the obedience of Allah.
