Question:
His Eminence, the Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz, the Grand Mufti of the Saudi Kingdom, may Allah preserve him
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that:
As you know, may Allah preserve you, the ninth day of Muharram 1415 AH this year fell on a Saturday, and the tenth day was a Sunday, according to the Umm al-Qura calendar. Acting in accordance with the hadith, the hadith, or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, I fasted on Saturday and Sunday (9-10/1).
However, one of the brothers objected to fasting on Saturday, saying that voluntary fasting on that day is prohibited based on what is reported in a hadith. He mentioned its meaning but did not quote its text.
Out of my desire to clarify the issue, and acting in accordance with the saying of the Exalted, [Al-Nahl: 43], I ask you, Your Eminence, to clarify this difficulty, citing the hadith and the extent of its authenticity, and to give your advice regarding this matter. May Allah preserve you.
Answer:
And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
The hadith mentioned is well known and is found in Bulugh al-Maram in the book on fasting. It is a weak, anomalous hadith that contradicts the authentic hadiths, among which is his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:Bulugh al-Maram 5:41 It is known that the day following it is Saturday. The hadith mentioned is in the two Sahihs, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast on Saturday and Sunday and say: There are many hadiths to this effect, all of which indicate the permissibility of fasting on Saturday voluntarily.
May Allah guide everyone, and peace be upon you, the mercy of Allah, and His blessings.
