The Virtue of Dhikr

Question:
There are certain dhikr phrases in some of the noble Prophetic hadiths where saying them a specific number of times results in the freeing of a certain number of slaves, as mentioned in the Prophetic hadith:Sunan an-Nasa'i 1339Sahih (Darussalam) Whoever says this one hundred times a day, it is as if he has freed ten slaves. Is it possible for a Muslim to expiate the mistakes he commits by reciting these noble hadiths, if his sin is expiated by freeing a number of slaves that might be less than ten? And what is intended by the phrase in the hadith: "one hundred times a day"? Does he say it on only one day? Or should he repeat this hadith throughout his life, one hundred times every day? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer:
This hadith is among the authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was narrated by the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhari and Muslim, in their Sahihs, from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6403.
This is a great virtue and much good from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) . If this dhikr is done with faith, truthfulness, and sincerity, this great good is attained. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) explained on behalf of Allah that with it, one hundred sins are erased, one hundred good deeds are recorded, and it is equivalent to freeing ten slaves, meaning: he frees them. However, a group of scholars mentioned that this applies to sins other than major sins; based on the saying of the Exalted: [Al-Nisa: 31]. So if the servant avoids major sins, his prayer, his purification, his supplications, and his dhikr become expiation for his minor sins. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) may bestow upon the servant the abundance of dhikr, whereby Allah erases even the major sins, especially if it is accompanied by sincere repentance.
Therefore, the believer should have a good intention and a good purpose with these dhikr, along with sincerity to Allah and truthfulness in saying them, along with repentance to Allah the Sublime, along with truthfulness in the oneness of Allah and sincerity to Him, and worshipping Him alone without anything else. Then this faith and this sincerity should lead him to performing the obligatory duties, avoiding the forbidden, and standing by the limits of Allah, so that all his sins are expiated whenever he says it with truthfulness and sincerity, and sincere faith, and sincere repentance.
In any case, this is glad tidings from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and a great good for the believing men and women.
The point of the hadith is that this reward is attained by the believer with this dhikr every day if he says it truthfully and sincerely. It is not permissible for him to persist in sins and rely on this hadith and its like; because that is among the causes of being deprived of this reward; due to the previous verse, and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 214Sahih (Darussalam), and in another wording: , narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih. And success is from Allah.
