The ruling on imitating the disbelievers for the purpose of calling them and encouraging them to Islam?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some of the brothers say that it is obligatory to call the disbelievers, upon every capable Muslim, and that it is permissible for a Muslim to reside among the disbelievers and imitate them in the path of calling them to Islam, and that this calling does not require knowledge or jurisprudence, relying on the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayahبلغوا عني ولو آية
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)
. What is the correctness of their statement? Is there a specific jurisprudence for such a call? Is this call an individual obligation or a collective obligation?

Answer:
It is not permissible to reside among the polytheists if one is unable to manifest his religion; residing among them is not permissible unless one is able to manifest his religion, manifesting the oneness of Allah, prayer, and good deeds. It is not permissible to imitate the disbelievers, even for the purpose of calling them; it is not permissible to imitate them. However, he calls them according to his knowledge, saying to them: "Say: There is no god but Allah," and he teaches them the meaning of "There is no god but Allah" according to his knowledge, and he teaches them the obligatory acts of the religion, even if he does not have extensive knowledge, to the extent of his knowledge,
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayahبلغوا عني ولو آية
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)
. He teaches them the Qur'an. And when they become Muslims, he says to them: "Bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and they believe in the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and follow him. He teaches them from what Allah has given him according to ease. But if there is someone more knowledgeable than him, he seeks his help so that the conveyance is more complete. The more complete the conveyance, the more beneficial it is for the one being called and the greater the reward. Otherwise, a person conveys according to his capacity.
