Ruling on facing the Zamzam well in prayer instead of the qiblah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This brother says in his observation, Your Eminence, may Allah reward you, I have seen many pilgrims facing the Zamzam well and praying two rak'ahs without facing the Ka'bah. I hope you will kindly urge the authorities to guide the pilgrims in this matter. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
This is invalid, and it is obligatory to point this out; because it is not permissible for anyone to face Zamzam or anything else. It is obligatory to face the Ka'bah in every place. If one can see the Ka'bah, he must face it directly in the mosque, and when far away, he must face its direction. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded this
And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]وَحَيْثُمَا كُنْتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ
[al-Baqarah:144]. So it is obligatory for all Muslims to face the Ka'bah: if they are in its presence, they face it directly, and if they are far away, they face its direction. The ignorant person is taught if he faces Zamzam or anything else; the ignorant person is taught.
The people of the Haram and the men of the Haram must teach the ignorant person and guide him. This is the obligation of everyone, and this falls under the category of enjoining good and forbidding evil. And Allah says:
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrongوَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ
[al-Tawbah:71].
