The Ruling on Photographic Imaging

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is your opinion of those who say: "Photographic imaging of a human being is permissible, but imaging done by hand is forbidden"? And what is your advice to the sisters who seek a ruling without knowledge?

Answer:
Imaging is not permissible, neither by hand nor by any other means. All imaging is wrong, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the imagers. He said (peace and blessings be upon him):
the most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of picturesأشد الناس عذابًا يوم القيامة المصورون
Sahih Muslim 2109a
, and he said:
Everyone who makes representations of things will go to hellكل مصور في النار
Mishkat al-Masabih 4498

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw an image in a cloth belonging to Aisha, he took it and tore it up, and said:
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'إن أصحاب هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة، ويقال لهم: أحيوا ما خلقتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam)
It is obligatory for every Muslim to beware of imaging. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he cursed the one who consumes riba (usury or interest), and he cursed the one who is given it, and he cursed the imager, and he cursed the one who tattoos and the one who gets tattooed. This means one should beware of this. The one who consumes riba, the one who gets tattooed, and imaging beings with souls—such as imaging a pigeon, a chicken, a camel, a human, a bird, or anything else—none of this is permissible to image, whether on paper, on rags, on wood, or on anything else. Three-dimensional imaging is also not permissible.
One must beware of issuing rulings without knowledge, both men and women alike. It is obligatory for every person to fear Allah, and it is obligatory for every woman to fear Allah, and neither should issue a ruling except with knowledge. It is not permissible to speak about Allah without knowledge. It is obligatory for every Muslim to beware of this, because issuing a ruling without knowledge has a great danger. It is obligatory for the believer to beware of that and not to speak except with knowledge, and to seek forgiveness from Allah for what has passed from him.
