On the Reliance of Some People on Intellectual and Cultural Books

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people rely on intellectual and cultural books and read from them, and then they think they are scholars and preachers, even though they are weak in the understanding of the religion and have not read in the books of Islamic law. What is your guidance for such a person?

A: Knowledge: Allah said, and His Messenger said, not so-and-so said and so-and-so said. Knowledge is what Allah said and what His Messenger said, followed by the words of the scholars explaining and clarifying it for the people. The scholars are the successors of Allah among His servants after the messengers. He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said:
Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice.شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَ وَالْمَلائِكَةُ وَأُولُو الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ
[Al Imran: 18]. And knowledge is knowledge of Allah and His religion. He, the Exalted, said:
Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge.إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ
[Fatir: 28]. They are the messengers and their followers, the people of insight, the people of religion, the people of truth, the people of the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
The scholars are the successors of the messengers, and they are the ones who clarify and guide to Allah and His religion. A student of knowledge does not become one of the scholars except by reflecting upon and learning the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and taking knowledge from the scholars of the Sunnah. This is the path of knowledge: to turn to obedience, reflection, understanding, and benefit. One should read as a student seeking knowledge, from the beginning to the end, and reflect and understand, and consult what is difficult for him in the approved books of tafsir, such as the tafsir of Ibn Kathir and al-Baghawi, and other approved tafsirs. He should care for the books of the noble hadith, and take knowledge from the scholars of the people of the Sunnah and the community, the people of insight, not from the scholars of kalam, nor from the scholars of innovation, nor from the ignorant.
Knowledge that is not from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger is not called knowledge, but is called ignorance. Even if it is beneficial knowledge in this world, the intended knowledge is that which benefits in the Hereafter, saves from ignorance, allows a person to see clearly in the religion, and enables him to know what Allah has made obligatory upon him and what He has forbidden. This is the knowledge of the Shari'ah.
