The Most Important Books of Creed
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: We ask you to kindly guide us to the most important books of creed?
Answer: The most important, greatest, and most beneficial book of creed is the Great Qur'an; it is the most important book, the most truthful book, the greatest book, and the most noble book. So you must hold fast to it with your teeth and recite it frequently from its beginning to its end, for it is all creed and guidance to every good and warning against every evil. Read it with reflection, care, and a desire for knowledge, and adhere to what it indicates in speech, action, and creed, and you will find in it every good from its beginning to its end, from Surat al-Fatihah to[An-Nas 114:1]. Reflect on that great book and increase in its recitation and reflection on its meanings, for in it is the explanation of the creed that Allah has accepted for you and for the believers.
Then after that, you must turn to the books of the noble hadith, such as the two Sahihs and others, then the books of the scholars known for knowledge, virtue, and correct creed, such as the books of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, including [Al-Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah], [Al-Tamimiyyah], [Al-Hamawiyyah], [Minhaj al-Sunnah], [Majmu' al-Fatawa], [The Creed of Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani], and Ibn Abi al-'Izz's commentary on [The Tahawi Creed], which is a beneficial commentary.
Among these are the books of Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him); these are good and beneficial books. Also included are [Fath al-Majid] by Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan, [The Book of Tawhid] by Shaykh al-Imam Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab, [Kashf al-Shubuhat], and [The Three Fundamental Principles] by him as well, and [Al-Durar al-Saniyyah], which contains the fatwas of the scholars of Najd.
I advise students of knowledge at the beginning of their pursuit to memorize the Book of Allah or whatever is easy for them, and to memorize [The Book of Tawhid], [Kashf al-Shubuhat], [The Three Fundamental Principles], and [Al-Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah], as it is concise in explaining tawhid (the oneness of Allah) in its three categories, and the Salafi creed. This is the creed to which Shaykh al-Imam Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on him) called, and it is the creed of the Salaf, and it is the creed of the Saudi state. Its reality is adhering to the Book and the Sunnah and what the Salaf of the Ummah were upon in creed and rulings, as indicated by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and what the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and those who followed them in goodness practiced. Some people call it the Wahhabi creed and consider it a new creed that contradicts the Book and the Sunnah, but that is not the case; rather, it is the creed that the Salaf of the Ummah practiced, as mentioned above. However, the enemies labeled it with this name to deter people from it and its people, and some people did so out of ignorance and imitation of others.
Therefore, the student of knowledge should not be deceived by that! He should know the truth from their books and what they practiced, not from the statements of their opponents or from those who are ignorant of their creed. We ask Allah for guidance and success for everyone.
