The Ruling on Slaughtered Animals Slaughtered for the Mawlid
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on the slaughters that take place during the mawlid, and the dhikr and beating of drums?
A: All of this is a religious innovation (bid'ah) that must be abandoned, as the scholars have explicitly stated. It did not exist in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor did he command it, nor did he or his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) do it, nor did the righteous Salaf. They did not know of this innovation, which is celebrating the mawlid. They did not celebrate the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor the birth of Abu Bakr, nor 'Umar, nor 'Uthman, nor 'Ali, nor anyone else. Rather, this innovation arose due to the Rafidah Fatimids in the fourth century and thereafter, and then some people followed them. So this innovation spread due to ignorance, and many people promote it and encourage it. These are among those who assist in falsehood. It is obligatory to be alert to this and to guard against it. It is not permissible to attend them or to participate in their feasts. It is obligatory to warn them against it and to make clear that this is an error and that it is a religious innovation (bid'ah), and that celebrating the mawlid is among the causes of associating partners with Allah (shirk). Many of these people have various types of major shirk spreading among them: this one calls upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), this one calls upon al-Husayn (peace be upon him), and this one calls upon al-Badawi.
The conclusion is: it is a religious innovation (bid'ah) and a means to shirk, and it contains many wrongdoings in many societies and in many countries. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [Surat al-Shura: 21]. And He the Exalted said: [Surat al-A'raf: 3]. And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [Surat 'Ali 'Imran: 31].
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1718a It is agreed upon as authentic. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1718b It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say in the Friday sermon: Sahih Muslim 867a It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. And the hadiths in this meaning are numerous.
As for the slaughtered animals, the ruling differs. If they are slaughtered for the person of the mawlid, then this is major shirk. But if they are slaughtered for eating, then there is nothing wrong with that. However, one should not eat from them, and a Muslim should not attend in order to rebuke them with words and actions; except if he attends to advise them without participating in their eating or anything else. And success is from Allah.
