"And his intention is a condition"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "And his intention is a condition". His intention means the intention of the ritual. What is the intention of the ritual? It means that the intention to enter into the ritual is a condition. Therefore, one must intend to enter into the ritual. If one recites the talbiyah without the intention to enter into the ritual, he does not become in a state of ihram merely by reciting the talbiyah. If one wears the clothes of ihram without the intention to enter into the ritual, he does not become in a state of ihram by wearing the clothes of ihram. The intention is necessary. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
. The talbiyah may be recited by someone other than a pilgrim. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say, when he saw something in this world that pleased him:
At your service, for the true life is the life of the Hereafter. لبيك إن العيش عيش الآخرة
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 9:3196
. I am mentioning this as an aside because it is important for you. If you see something in this world that pleases you, such as palaces, cars, buildings, wives, or anything else, say: "Labbaik, indeed life is the life of the Hereafter." Look at how a person restrains himself by saying "Labbaik" in response to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), so that his soul does not follow after this world. Then he said:
The real life is that of the Here-after إن العيش عيش الآخرة
Sahih al-Bukhari 2834
. And that this life before me is nothing, it is transient.
So, the intention is necessary. Is wearing the ihram sufficient? Answer.
The audience: No.

The Shaykh : No. Is it sufficient to say "Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik"?
The audience: No.

The Shaykh : No, because the talbiyah is recited by the pilgrim and by others.
