What is the ruling on the minaret in the mosque?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: All right, what is the ruling on the minaret in the mosque?

The Shaykh : Naturally, the minaret is originally an innovation that is not based on the Shari'ah. In the past, it could have been considered a means to achieve a legitimate objective, namely conveying the adhan to the farthest places. This could have been said in times past before the existence of the loudspeaker. However, with the existence of the loudspeaker, the minaret is undoubtedly, first, a bid'ah (religious innovation), and second, a waste of money because it costs thousands and thousands. The loudspeaker is sufficient for it. The only observation is building a formal minaret that draws the attention of passersby to indicate that this is a mosque. As for the objective that was intended by building the minaret, it is achieved by the loudspeaker. Therefore, what is currently established in Saudi Arabia, for example, in Makkah and al-Madinah, with four or five skyscraper-like minarets, is all a waste of money and is not permissible. Rather, the loudspeaker is what performs this duty. Likewise, in the mosques here in Oman and elsewhere, I have seen in some villages modest houses and a minaret in them. Who is going to hear it? There is no mu'adhdhin who climbs it, and the loudspeaker is not placed at its top. So, all of this is showing off. In reality, this is a manifestation of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The Last Hour will not come until people vie with one another about mosques. لا تقوم الساعة حتَّى يتباهى الناس بالمساجد
Sunan Abi Dawud 449Sahih (Al-Albani)
