Explanation of the author's (may Allah have mercy on him) statement: "… Chapter on the State (al-Hal) …".

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the State (al-Hal)"
Al-Hal (the state) is, in language, the condition in which a thing is found. It is masculine in form but feminine in meaning. It is masculine in form but feminine in meaning; this is the most eloquent usage. For this reason, you say "the first state" (al-hal al-ula) and do not say "the first condition" (al-halah al-ula). You say "the first state" and do not say "the first condition," even though the common expression among many people is to say "the first condition" and "except in this condition." However, the most eloquent way is to say "the first state" and "in this state," and not to say "in this condition." So, al-hal means the condition in which a thing is found. If a person is sick, you say his state is sickness. If he is healthy, his state is health. If he is full, his state is fullness, and so on.
