Is it better to go to the mosque early or to perform voluntary prayers at home?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Regarding voluntary prayers, how do you reconcile the fact that voluntary prayer is better at home with going to the mosque early?

Answer:
The most excellent prayer of a person is (that which he prays) in his house except that which is prescribed (the five congregational prayers).أفضل صلاة المرء في بيته إلا المكتوبة
Bulugh al-Maram 2:313
, the Duha prayer, the Tahajjud prayer, and the regular voluntary prayers are all better performed at home, and if one prays them in the mosque, there is no harm.
Q: As for the pre-prayer regular voluntary prayers, is it better to pray them in the mosque or at home?
The Shaykh: The general rule applies; the hadith is general. If you pray them at home and then come to pray the greeting of the mosque, that is fine. If you intend to go early, there is a valid reason to pray them in the mosque: to secure the first row or a position near the imam. There is leeway in this matter, as being near the imam or in the first row is a sound objective. Some mosques fill up early due to the large number of attendees. If you arrive with the adhan or before it to secure the first row, it may be better from this perspective, for the sake of racing to the first row. As for the post-prayer regular voluntary prayers, it is better to pray them at home.
