Question:
His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Abu Dharr is reported as saying, "Your putting some of the water from your bucket in your brother's bucket is sadaqa. Your removing stones. thorns and bones from people's path is sadaqa. Your guiding a man in a place where there are no guides is sadaqa."وتبسمك في وجه أخيك صدقة
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 891
, does this indicate that one should not smile in the face of a mushrik or a disbeliever?

Answer:
Toward the mushrik, one should show severity, dislike, and display of disavowal. As for affection, smiling, and cooperation, these are between Muslims. As for with disbelievers, it is dislike, hatred, and enmity, except when there is hope for benefit; that is, to reconcile their hearts and call them to Allah. In that case, there is no harm.
Q: Is there no harm in smiling in his face to call him to the religion of Allah?
A: There is no harm, there is no harm in calling to Allah if one sees benefit in it.
