Question:
The jurists cite this hadith:
And whatever condition you stipulate will be accepted by your Lord.فإنَّ لك على ربِّك ما استثنيت
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2766Hasan (Darussalam)
regarding making a condition in i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque). Is this permissible?

Answer:
The principle is that acts of worship are based on divine legislation, and i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) is not obligatory. If he leaves, there is nothing wrong with it; it becomes a nafilah (voluntary prayer) that is recommended. If he wants to break it, there is no blame on him.
