Ruling on one who swears to do something three times and then breaks the oath
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I swore by the Great Allah three times that I would do something if what I wanted did not happen. In my heart, I was hesitant about it, and I was certain that what I wanted would not happen, and that I would not carry out what I promised. I am now very regretful. Is there a sin on me? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
If a person swears to do something, or not to do it, three times, or four, or ten, or more, then if he breaks the oath, there is only one expiation. The expiation is one, provided that the thing sworn upon is a single matter. For example, if he says: "By Allah, I will not speak to so-and-so," "By Allah, I will not speak to so-and-so," "By Allah, I will not speak to so-and-so," or "By Allah, I will not visit so-and-so," "By Allah, I will not visit so-and-so," "By Allah, I will not visit so-and-so," and then he visits him or speaks to him, it is one expiation.
Or if he says: "By Allah, I will marry so-and-so," "By Allah, I will marry so-and-so," "By Allah, I will marry so-and-so," and then he does not marry her, it is one expiation. Or "By Allah, I will travel to such-and-such a country," "By Allah, I will travel," "By Allah, I will travel," and then he decides not to travel, it is one expiation. Yes.
