What is the ruling on lost property?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The ruling on lost property, if you please, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : The ruling on what?

The questioner : Lost property.

The Shaykh : Lost property. And yesterday you were asked about lost property; perhaps you are the one who found it.

The questioner: Hehehe.

The Shaykh : The ruling on lost property: if one finds it outside the Makkah Haram, he must announce it for a year in the traditional ways. As for the methods that have become easier today, it is sufficient to announce it in some newspapers and pay the cost of the announcement from the value of the lost property itself. If the owner appears after a full year, it is returned to him, and the cost of the announcement is deducted from it. If the owner does not appear, he takes possession of it and consumes it with ease and comfort.

The questioner : Even if it is five dinars.

The Shaykh : He gives it in charity.
