The Ranks of Taqwa

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return in this episode to the listener’s letter: Mustawr Hamid Abdullah al-Suwt. Our brother Mustawr, we presented some of his questions in a previous episode, and in this episode he has a collection of questions. He asks and says: What are the ranks of taqwa, with mention of the evidence—if you would be kind? May Allah reward you with good?
Answer: The ranks of taqwa—as far as we know—are three categories, distinguished by the statement of Allah, (Exalted and Majestic is He):
Then we caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants; and among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who is foremost in good deedsثُمَ أَوْرَثْنَا الْكِتَابَ الَّذِينَ اصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ وَمِنْهُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْهُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيرَاتِ
[Fatir: 32]. So the one who is perfectly mindful of Allah is the one who races ahead in good deeds, who has fulfilled the obligatory duties, avoided the forbidden, and exerted himself in various types of good. This one is at the peak, he is the best, and he is complete in taqwa.
The second rank is the rank of the righteous who are moderate; those who have fulfilled the obligations and avoided the forbidden, but they do not have a race in various types of good and voluntary acts. Rather, they limited themselves to fulfilling the obligatory and avoiding the forbidden. These are called the moderate, and they are also called the righteous.
The third rank is the rank of the one who wrongs himself. He is the one who is mindful of Allah and has tawhid (the oneness of Allah), but he has some sins, he has some disobedience. This is what is meant by His statement:
and among them is he who wrongs himselfفَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ
[Fatir: 32], meaning: in disobedience.
So this is the lowest of the ranks of taqwa. The lowest of the ranks of taqwa is to be one who has tawhid (the oneness of Allah) for Allah, but he has some sins and evil deeds. These people are in different levels, some more dangerous than others according to their sins. So the fewer the sins, the less his wronging of himself, and the more the sins, the greater the danger.
So they are three ranks: a mindful one who wrongs himself, a mindful one who is moderate, and a mindful one who races ahead in good deeds. May Allah make us and you among those who race ahead. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
