How do we reconcile the hadith prohibiting fasting on Saturday with the hadith of Juwayriyah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: In another question.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner: Shaykh, regarding the hadith, may Allah reward you, regarding the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Do not fast on Saturdays apart from days when you are obliged to fast لا تصوموا يوم السبت إلا فيما افترض عليكم
Sunan Ibn Majah 1726Hasan (Darussalam)
.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner: To the end of the hadith, our Shaykh. Also, there is a hadith, may Allah know best, Shaykh, where he is speaking about a female Companion (may Allah be pleased with her) when he said to her:
Did you fast yesterday? Will you fast tomorrow? أصمت البارحة ؟ أتصومين غدًا ؟
.

The Shaykh: Juwayriyah.

The questioner: Juwayriyah, so how do we reconcile the two hadiths? May Allah reward you for me and for all the Muslims with good.

The Shaykh: First, the hadith does not imply more than the permissibility of fasting on Saturday for one who did not fast on Thursday along with Friday. This implies permissibility, and permissibility in many texts is lifted. And as we always say, anything from which we are prohibited, we know from the prohibition that it was previously permissible, so he is prohibiting you. Therefore, do not intentionally fast on Saturday after it was permissible, in order to make your fasting on Friday a standalone act. But he is now prohibiting you from fasting on Friday while you are aware that it is not permissible to fast on Saturday. So if you must be a voluntary fast and you want to fast on Friday, fast on Thursday and do not fast on Saturday, because you are aware of the prohibition of the Messenger (peace be upon him) regarding both matters: that you fast on Friday without Thursday in order to fast on Saturday. He has prohibited you from fasting on Saturday. So which text implies the permissibility of something, and another text prohibits that thing? The prohibition takes precedence; because the scholars say: when the prohibitive and the permissive conflict, the prohibitive is given precedence over the permissive. And more than that, when his (peace be upon him) action conflicts with his speech, his speech is given precedence over his action. So here are two rules that obligate us not to fast on Saturday except in the case of an individual obligation. Why? Because he prohibited it, and that [hadith] implied permissibility, so this permissibility was lifted by that hadith. That is the way of reconciling the hadith of Juwayriyah with the hadith prohibiting fasting on Saturday.
