The ruling on divorcing a woman who is arrogant toward her husband

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A letter from one of the listening brothers, in which he asks a long question complaining about his wife’s arrogance, her family’s harshness, and their humiliation of him. He says: “I have resolved to divorce her, but I am bound by the children I have with that wife. What do you advise me to do? And what do you advise that wife? May Allah reward you with good.”

Answer:
We advise him not to be hasty; he should not rush into divorce. He must instruct the woman to stop being arrogant, and she must strive to fulfill his rights and obey him in what is right. She should know that her arrogance regarding her beauty, her health, or her wealth is among the greatest means by which she will lose those things, and have her beauty, health, and wealth taken from her. It is also among the sins that may bring her much affliction.
It is obligatory for her to thank Allah and praise Him (Exalted and Majestic is He) for what He has given her, to be humble toward her husband, and to fulfill his rights. There is no harm in his asking her brother or her father to advise her, or her mother, or someone similar, until she becomes righteous. If her family is harsh toward him, he should bear it, be patient, and treat them in the best manner, with kind words, good conduct, appropriate visits, and meeting their needs if they require anything. This is how he addresses the issues: by advising the woman, asking her family kindly to advise her, and being patient with her family’s harshness through kind words, good conduct, and appropriate visits, until the harshness from her family disappears and the arrogance from her disappears. He should not rush into divorce; he should not rush. If these measures do not benefit, and she harms him with her arrogance, and her family harms him with their harshness, and he finds no alternative but to divorce her, then there is no blame on him, and praise be to Allah. Allah made divorce a relief for the husband from the evil of the wife. However, as long as he hopes that the problem will be resolved by her turning back from her falsehood and her arrogance, and by her fulfilling her husband’s rights over her, and that the harshness from her family will disappear, then Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is capable of everything. He must take the necessary measures, and success is from Allah. If the measures do not benefit, let him do what is best, whether that is divorce or not. Yes.
