The Ruling on Praying in Mosques That Contain Innovations

Question:
We now move on to Sudan, via a message we received from the kind listener Muhammad Saleh Ibrahim from the Agricultural Administration. The kind brother sent six questions: in one of them he says: In Sudan, it is rare to find a mosque that does not contain an innovation, and sometimes you find a structure claimed to be for a close friend of Allah, or graves in the courtyard of the mosque. What should I do regarding these wrongs? Do I pray in such mosques?
Answer:
Yes, if you are in a mosque that contains some innovations, pray with the people and denounce the innovation. If there is an innovation, denounce it. Say: “O my brothers! This is not permissible—may Allah guide you”—and cooperate with the scholars and the righteous in removing it, and with the authorities, such as the princes and others. Cooperate in righteousness and piety. As for the mosque that contains graves, do not pray in it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the Jews and the Christians and said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 2046Sahih (Darussalam).
So, do not pray in a mosque that contains a grave; seek out a mosque that does not contain a grave. As for if it contains an innovation, and you find mosques that do not contain an innovation, pray in the mosques that do not contain an innovation. If you do not find one, or if you are able to denounce the innovation, pray with them, denounce the innovation, teach them, and guide them, so that you may be a guide and guided, and so that you may save them from this innovation. If they do not respond to you and you find a mosque that does not contain an innovation, then isolate yourself from them and pray in the other mosque. Otherwise, pray with them, and remain steadfast in denouncing the innovation and teaching them. Do not despair, and Allah will help you and grant you success in such good deeds. Yes.
