What is the difference between innovations in creed and innovations in worship?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a questioner for the program from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Cairo. The questioner is your sister (H. A. Sh). In her first question, she says: What is the difference between innovation in worship and innovation in creed?

Answer:
They are all innovations. Shirk in creed is an innovation, such as inventing festivals... gathering for festivals and celebrating them, or building on graves, and making mosques on them. All of this is an innovation, and it also relates to creed, and it causes much evil.
Likewise, innovation in prayer, or in fasting, or in Hajj, all of it is reprehensible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who innovates things in our affairsمن أحدث في أمرنا هذا
Sahih Muslim 1718a
meaning: Islam
for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
It is agreed upon that it is authentic. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
So believing in the righteous people or the people of the graves, and supplicating to them other than Allah, or calling for aid from them, this is major shirk in creed. Building on graves, and making mosques on them, is likewise an innovation, but it is less than shirk; it is one of the means to shirk. Plastering them, and placing domes on them, are also means to shirk, and means to the corruption of creed.
The other innovations are when one innovates a prayer that Allah has not legislated, or a gathering that Allah has not legislated, such as the innovation of Mawlid, celebrating Mawlid, or what is similar to that of acts of worship that he invents. This is called an innovation, and it is among the innovations in the branches. Or he innovates in prayer, or in fasting, or in Hajj.
The point is that the criterion for innovations is that one comes with a worship that Allah has not legislated. For example, if he prays with three prostrations, placing three prostrations in the rak'ah intentionally, or two bowings, this is a reprehensible and invalid innovation. Likewise, he invents a fast that Allah has not legislated, such as saying: the fasting person fasts from the night thus, and does not break his fast until such a time has passed of the night, or he advances the fast by a part of the night; he takes a piece of the night before the dawn appears. This is an innovation. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
