The Ruling on Swearing by Euphemisms
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Finally, we present a question from one of our listening brothers. He says: Your brother in Allah, Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-‘Al Hasan, from the Arab Republic of Egypt, asks your Eminence: Is it permissible to swear by euphemisms (tauriyyah) or not? And is there any evidence? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
If the oath is truthful, there is nothing wrong with it if there is a need for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) swore many oaths, and he was truthful, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. So, if one swears to emphasize a point and reassure the person, and he is truthful, there is nothing wrong with it.
As for the euphemisms used to avoid falling into lying, if one intends something and swears to it, there is nothing wrong with it. If he intends something and says, “By Allah, so-and-so is not present now,” meaning he is in a specific house and cannot clarify his situation, and he intends a specific house and is truthful, then there is nothing wrong with using euphemisms. Or, “By Allah, so-and-so did not do such and such,” meaning he did not do it at a specific time or at a specific time, when there is a necessity for this, meaning he did not do it at a specific time, if there are benefits in that and the prevention of evil.
