Ruling on Doubt Regarding the Number of Prostrations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A man is in doubt about the prostration: did he prostrate once or twice? Is the prostration for forgetfulness obligatory for him, given the situation described?

Answer:
If this doubt arises after the completion of the prayer, and he knows that the prayer was complete, and then the doubt occurs to him, this does not affect his prayer; it is valid, and praise be to Allah. However, if the doubt arises during the prostration itself—whether he prostrated once or twice—he should consider it as one prostration and perform the second prostration. When he finishes the tashahhud and supplication, he performs the prostration for forgetfulness. But if he concluded the prayer believing it to be complete, and the doubt occurred to him afterwards, he should not pay attention to it.
