The ruling on one who doubts whether he prostrated one of the prostrations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner from Jazan, Umm Muhammad, says in this question: I prayed the 'Asr prayer, and when I prostrated, I did not know whether I prostrated once or twice. I completed the prayer with the prostration for forgetfulness without prostrating another time despite my doubt. Is my prayer valid?

Answer:
This requires detail. If the doubt is without a preponderant opinion, it is obligatory for you to perform the second prostration and complete your prayer, then perform the prostration for forgetfulness. If you did not do so, you must perform an extra rak'ah that invalidates the rak'ah from which you left the prostration, and you perform an extra rak'ah in its place, and you must perform the prostration for forgetfulness. So if you doubt in one of the rak'ahs whether you prostrated twice or once and did not perform the second prostration, you must perform an extra rak'ah. Then, after completing the tashahhud and supplication, you prostrate twice for forgetfulness.
As for if the doubt is accompanied by a preponderant opinion, meaning you thought and it was preponderant in your opinion that you prostrated twice, then nothing is required of you, and the prostration for forgetfulness is sufficient. The prostration for forgetfulness is sufficient, and praise be to Allah. But you must always be cautious and seek refuge in Allah from Satan; because Satan may harm through whispers. So if doubt occurs, build upon certainty. If you doubt whether you prayed two or three, make it two and then complete the prayer. And if you doubt whether you prostrated once or twice, prostrate the second one.
As for if it is preponderant in your opinion that you did not forget and that you did the correct thing, then complete the prayer and prostrate twice for forgetfulness after the taslim, which is better, if you did that based on opinion and preponderant opinion. As for with doubt, no, with doubt you must have certainty. If you doubt, certainty is necessary. If you doubt whether you prostrated the second one or not, prostrate. And if you doubt whether you prayed two or three, make it two and complete the prayer, then prostrate for forgetfulness before the taslim. And if you prostrate after the taslim, there is no harm.
As for with a preponderant opinion, the prostration for forgetfulness is sufficient. You build upon the preponderant opinion and prostrate for forgetfulness. And the best in this case is for the prostration for forgetfulness to be after the taslim if the basis is a preponderant opinion.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
