Ruling on the congregational prayer for one suffering from the flu

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
When a person is afflicted with what is called "the flu," which is an illness that allows a person to leave his house, but is a contagious disease—as the doctors say—is it permissible for a person in this case to pray in his house so as not to harm or hurt others, by analogy to the one who eats garlic or onions, whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade from approaching the mosque? And a cold is a compelling illness, not food that a person eats by choice?

Answer:
It is obligatory for every man who is able to pray in congregation to pray in congregation; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever hears the call for prayer and and does not come (to the mosque for prayer), his prayer will not be accepted from him, unless he has a (legitimate) excuse.من سمع النداء فلم يأت فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:308
It was asked of Ibn Abbas, "What is the excuse?" He said, "Fear or illness." So if it is difficult for him to go out because of the illness, he is excused. As for the claim of contagion, it is not an excuse; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no ‘Adwa, no omen, no Hamah and no Safar.لا عدوى ولا طيرة ولا هامة ولا صفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 3539
.
As for the one who eats garlic, onions, or leeks, it is not permissible for him to pray with the congregation; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that and ordered him to be taken out of the mosque, to protect the worshippers from his harm. May Allah guide them all.
