Ruling on keeping the skins of predatory animals
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From Sulayman al-Qanasi of Buraydah, he sent this message asking about the skin of a fox. He says: “Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. And after that: Is the skin of a fox forbidden? And is it permissible to keep it for adornment? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good, and thank you?”
In fact, we have taken an interest in this topic because many skins are now sold in the markets, and they are of different types of predatory animals and others.
Answer: There is much disagreement among the scholars regarding the skins of predatory animals, the skins of foxes, wolves, and leopards. There is much disagreement among the scholars about them. What should be done is that they should not be kept and should not be used, because there are hadiths indicating the prohibition of the skins of predatory animals, and of lying on them, and of riding on them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called tanning a purification, a lawful slaughter. This indicates that tanning is only for what is purified by lawful slaughter, such as the meat-eating animals among camels, cattle, sheep, and the like. The skins of these are good, even if they are dead, if they are tanned. As for predatory animals, they are impure, even if they are slaughtered, they are impure, so tanning does not affect them. Therefore, what should be done by the believer is that he should not use the skins of predatory animals, neither the fox nor any other. This is the stronger of the opinions of the scholars, and it is the most cautious for the believer. Yes.
