The Ruling on Using Caskets in the Burial of the Dead

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We received this message from Iraq from Maryam. Maryam says in it: Is the casket for placing the dead forbidden for women or men? And we offer you our sincere thanks.
Answer: It is prescribed that the dead be buried in the earth and not placed in caskets. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do this, nor did his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction). This is contrary to the Sunnah, so it should not be done; because it is contrary to the Sunnah of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and contrary to what his Companions and the scholars after them did.
The Sunnah is that the deceased is shrouded in three white garments for a man; this is the best. If he is shrouded in others, such as black, green, or blue, it is permissible. If he is shrouded in a single garment that covers him entirely, there is nothing wrong with it. However, he is not to be placed in a casket, but rather placed on the earth. He is placed in the grave on the earth, and the bricks that seal the grave are placed over him, then earth is thrown over him as our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did and as the Muslims did. As for placing the dead in coffins and caskets, there is no basis for it, and it should not be done. Yes.
