The Aspect of a Person Being Directed or Given Choice
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener, Salah Ali Abdulaziz, from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Sohag Governorate, sent several questions, one of which asks: Is a person given choice, or is he directed?
Answer:
He is both a chooser and one who is directed; he is a chooser. Allah the Exalted said:[At-Takwir 81:28] And you do not will except that Allah, the Lord of the worlds, wills[Surat al-Takwir: 28-29] And He the Exalted said:[Surat Yunus: 22] So he is directed in the sense that Allah’s divine decree is effective in him, and that Allah has preceded in His knowledge everything that the servants do; He has decreed the affairs and judged themand written them with Him. But He has given the servant intellect, hearing, sight, choice, and action. So he works and strives by his own will and desire, but by doing so he does not go outside the will of Allah, nor outside the preceding decree of Allah.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction): Then he recited His saying, the Exalted: [Surat al-Layl: 5-10].
So the servant must work, strive, and exert himself in the obedience of Allah, and he must guard against His sinsand he has no right to plead divine decree as an excuse. Allah’s decree is effective in His servants, but He has given people hearing, sight, and intellect, and He has given them strength and commanded them to take the means. Yes.

For whoever wills among you to take a right course.
It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction):
None of you is there but that his place in Paradise and his place in the Fire has been written. They said: O Messenger of Allah! Should we then rely on the record and leave off the work? He said (peace and blessings be upon him): Work, for everyone is facilitated for what he was created for. As for the people of happiness, they are facilitated for the work of the people of happiness, and as for the people of misery, they are facilitated for the work of the people of misery
(5) As for he who gives and fears Allah (6) And believes in the best [reward], (7) We will ease him toward ease. (8) But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need (9) And denies the best [reward],
So the servant must work, strive, and exert himself in the obedience of Allah, and he must guard against His sinsand he has no right to plead divine decree as an excuse.
